How to Recognize and Use Your Intuition, and Why You Should

Intuition in its purest form is a gut feeling that is a truth and a direction you are pointed in.

How to recognize it

When someone asks you a question it's the first internal response. People often don't share what that is out loud, and almost equally often don't even pause to hear it. It's that feeling in the pit of your stomach (your gut), sometimes it's tight, or drops, or is empty.

Ever had a passing thought of an acquaintance from a long time ago and suddenly their name shows up, or your friend is talking about that mutual person from high school way back when? That's your intuition. It is a knowing that is connected to the energetic networks of the Universe, so when you are "plugged in", you're getting information without recognizing it as such. It functions as warning at times, and often seems unexplainable but is just there.

Sometimes you're driving and you know all the possible routes and you know which is shortest or fastest or least trafficky, and you have almost too much data so you can't decide which is best. This is your analytical mind. Your intuition is that subtle draw towards one of those paths. If you see them all through your inner self, one path seems more brightly lit? It has more of a lightness and a feel-good factor to it. People often write it off because it sounds silly or doesn't "make sense". But there it was, the path you could have taken or did take that saved you from a mysterious disaster, or was surprisingly traffic-free, or led you to "coincidentally" (no such thing) run into someone you know. Or it simply has a flow to it, going that way reminded you of another thing you needed to do and now that happens with ease. My friend was deciding about whether to make this spontaneous adventurous trip to Miami or not, and she came across a magazine stand with the 3 covers telling her - "Go for it! Go for it! Go for it!" She went for it. She's having a blast.

Intuition is a lighthouse. It points subtly or strongly in a direction, and then it's up to us to tune our channels of receiving the message or not. By receive, I mean to recognize it as a sign, literally a road sign, and then to follow that direction, even if it does not "make sense" in the moment to the conscious mind.

How to use it

Trust it. Believe it. Follow it. Act on it. Do what it guides you to do. Doing this in moments when you can't reason or understand why, but feel like it's a sign and it's right for unknown reason, means you are allowing that opening to widen. The visual - light is coming in through an opening and because you're using the light as a flashlight in the dark, your eyes are becoming accustomed to it and following it and relying on it. That's how faith works. Guidance comes but people don't recognize it or act on it. So when you do act on it, the light gets brighter. You are making it brighter by relying on it more. This is the process of surrender.

If you don't understand it, still act on it. If you think about someone and have no idea why, perhaps look them up or reach out. If you dream of someone, notice the theme and feelings of the dream. The quality of intuitive dreams is that when you wake up, the emotion of it is still present or quite strong. These are those vivid dreams that you have a hard time shaking off. If there is an instruction in the dream, do it. And do things quickly - the faster your respond the better it can serve you and others. When we don't trust it and don't act, things change because life is always dynamic. Messages are time-sensitive. Just like our physical body matures and ages, we need different nutrients over our lifespan to nourish ourselves. The same goes for intuition. What applies to a situation now will not be helpful later. Early interventions can make a great deal of difference in people's lives. Sometimes you will learn about how, and often you won't. But I can tell you with confidence that if you do start to act on it, you will see signs of why it matters and how it makes a difference. This is the Universe positively reinforcing you to continue :)

Why you should / how it can serve you and others

Because it is always there to help you. And more importantly, because it's coming from a network that is connected to all living beings, to life energy and a cosmic source, its information is supremely intelligent. It is providing guidance that if you follow, it will lead to greater benefit for more than one person, for everyone. It has the more complex solution that we cannot imagine because we have human sight which is limited to our own circumstances.

And like I said at the beginning, intuition is a pure truth. Telling ourselves the truth and telling the world and our friends and family and living a life that is completely in integrity with our known truths - is the hardest thing to practice. Intuition is there to teach us truth recognition in a gentle, loving way. It helps us go beyond ourselves and shows us glimpses of how our truth-telling and truth-living can change the world and why it's necessary to do that.

We spend so much energy and time and precious life trying to figure out What To Do. We don't need to :) We could be free of all this analysis and over-thinking which are huge barriers to joy and relaxation. We can live lives of much greater ease and clarity by cultivating intuition and relying on it for decision-making. In fact, the amazing secret is that there are no decisions to be made. There are only internal truths to be uncovered. The more we can bring our inner selves to the outside world, the deeper and more meaningful and authentic our lives and shared world can be. I'm not saying it's easy to live those truths, just saying that it's worth it. And can set us free.

  1. Wow. What a well written post! In one of your posts do you mind sharing your views on Coincidence? You say it doesn't exist. I'd love to hear your take on it. I am guessing you are saying being "plugged-in" is what people call coincidence. Is it?

Thanks Nitika! I am enjoying soaking in all the positive energy from your writings.

  2. Thanks Ashima. Your guess is accurate about my understanding on coincidence :) Also, I recommend reading a book called "Small Miracles" that is full of true experiences about how "coincidences" saved people's lives or some other such great thing. It's really incredible, and lovely to read.
